Novel microdevices for controlled blood and skin extraction, NHMRC

Lin, Lynlee L.; Prow, Tarl W.
Impact | 2017

This article describes development of submillimetre devices for minimally invasive skin and blood sampling. It summarizes proposed applications in dermatology, infectious disease, longitudinal testing, paediatrics, and low-resource settings.

Microbiopsy Biomarker Profiling in a Superficial Melanoma Resembling a Pigmented Basal Cell Carcinoma

Sobarun, P.; Hoang, V. L.; Yamada, M.; Lambie, D.; Soyer, H. P.; Prow, T. W.
JAMA Dermatol | 2017

Skin microbiopsy samples and qPCR biomarker analysis were used to compare a superficial melanoma with a pigmented basal cell carcinoma. The case illustrates how spatially targeted molecular sampling may complement conventional diagnostic assessment.

Quantification of saxitoxin in human blood by ELISA

Wharton, R. E.; Feyereisen, M. C.; Gonzalez, A. L.; Abbott, N. L.; Hamelin, E. I.; Johnson, R. C.
Toxicon | 2017

This study validated an ELISA for quantifying saxitoxin in whole and dried human blood collected with microsampling devices. The method was sensitive, rapid, and accurate within validation limits, although product relevance should be confirmed because the abstract does not identify the collection-device brand.

Capillary blood collected on volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) device for monitoring hydroxychloroquine in rheumatoid arthritis patients

Qu, Y.; Brady, K.; Apilado, R.; O'Malley, T.; Reddy, S.; Chitkara, P.; Ibarra, C.; Alexander, R. V.; Dervieux, T.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2017

Researchers developed and validated a VAMS–LC-MS/MS workflow for hydroxychloroquine and its metabolites in capillary blood from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. VAMS results supported accurate low-volume collection, simplified logistics, and the potential for patient sampling at home.

Whole blood microsampling for the quantitation of estetrol without derivatization by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Nys, G.; Gallez, A.; Kok, M. G. M.; Cobraiville, G.; Servais, A. C.; Piel, G.; Pequeux, C.; Fillet, M.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2017

This study developed and validated a VAMS–UHPLC-MS/MS method for measuring estetrol in small whole-blood samples without derivatization. The method showed suitable sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and stability and performed well in two proof-of-concept pharmacokinetic studies in mice.

Application of volumetric absorptive microsampling device for quantification of tacrolimus in human blood as a model drug of high blood cell partition

Kita, K.; Mano, Y.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2017

This study evaluated VAMS for quantifying tacrolimus in human whole blood across low, medium, and high hematocrit levels. The assay showed acceptable analytical performance and consistent recovery, while storage findings indicated that samples should remain frozen and that time-dependent recovery requires attention.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) as an alternative to conventional dried blood spots in the quantification of miltefosine in dried blood samples

Kip, A. E.; Kiers, K. C.; Rosing, H.; Schellens, J. H. M.; Beijnen, J. H.; Dorlo, T. P. C.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2017

Researchers developed and validated a VAMS–LC-MS/MS method for measuring miltefosine in dried blood as an alternative to conventional dried blood spots. The method performed well and reduced hematocrit-related bias, although recovery still declined at higher hematocrit and clinical validation was recommended.

Volumetric adsorptive microsampling-liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry assay for the simultaneous quantification of four antibiotics in human blood: Method development, validation and comparison with dried blood spot

Barco, S.; Castagnola, E.; Moscatelli, A.; Rudge, J.; Tripodi, G.; Cangemi, G.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2017

This study developed a VAMS–LC-MS/MS assay for simultaneous measurement of four antibiotics in 10 µL human blood and compared it with dried blood spots. The VAMS method was selective, precise, reproducible, and less affected by hematocrit, supporting pediatric pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring.

Dried haematic microsamples and LC-MS/MS for the analysis of natural and synthetic cannabinoids

Protti, M.; Rudge, J.; Sberna, A. E.; Gerra, G.; Mercolini, L.
J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci | 2017

Researchers developed and compared DBS and VAMS LC-MS/MS methods for natural and synthetic cannabinoids. The optimized dried-microsample protocols provide alternative tools for measuring THC, its major metabolites, and representative synthetic cannabinoids.

Sampling only ten microliters of whole blood for the quantification of poorly soluble drugs: Itraconazole as case study

Thiry, J.; Evrard, B.; Nys, G.; Fillet, M.; Kok, M. G. M.
J Chromatogr A | 2017

This study used 10 µL VAMS samples to support itraconazole pharmacokinetic studies while reducing blood volume and animal use. The method enabled repeated sampling from the same animals, although drug stability on the device was limited to 24 hours unless extracts were frozen.
