Microsampling Collection Methods for Measurement of C-peptide in Whole Blood

Jones, C.; Dunseath, G. J.; Lemon, J.; Luzio, S. D.
J Diabetes Sci Technol | 2018

This pilot study compared DBS and VAMS with plasma for measuring C-peptide as a marker of endogenous insulin secretion. Both microsampling methods agreed well with reference concentrations, with VAMS showing particularly strong short-term stability.

Quantitation of salbutamol using micro-volume blood sampling - applications to exacerbations of pediatric asthma

Cordell, R. L.; Valkenburg, T. S. E.; Pandya, H. C.; Hawcutt, D. B.; Semple, M. G.; Monks, P. S.
J Asthma | 2018

Researchers developed a GC-MS method for measuring salbutamol in 10 µL blood samples collected by VAMS. The assay was successfully applied after inhaled dosing and shows potential for therapeutic monitoring during severe pediatric asthma treatment.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) coupled with high-resolution, accurate-mass (HRAM) mass spectrometry as a simplified alternative to dried blood spot (DBS) analysis for therapeutic drug monitoring of cardiovascular drugs

Tanna, S.; Alalaqi, A.; Bernieh, D.; Lawson, G.
Clin Mass Spectrom | 2018

This study compared VAMS with conventional dried blood spot sampling for monitoring several cardiovascular drugs by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The validated VAMS assay accurately identified medication adherence and showed strong agreement with DBS while producing fewer unusable samples.

Metabolic Signature of Dietary Iron Overload in a Mouse Model

Volani, C.; Paglia, G.; Smarason, S. V.; Pramstaller, P. P.; Demetz, E.; Pfeifhofer-Obermair, C.; Weiss, G.
Cells | 2018

This study used VAMS and mass-spectrometry metabolomics to characterize the effects of dietary iron overload in mice. Iron loading altered glucose metabolism, the Krebs and urea cycles, and oxidative-stress pathways over time.

Evaluation of the Mitra microsampling device for use with key urinary metabolites in patients with Alkaptonuria

Taylor, J. M.; Hughes, A. T.; Milan, A. M.; Rudge, J.; Davison, A. S.; Ranganath, L. R.
Bioanalysis | 2018

This study evaluated VAMS for urinary metabolites relevant to alkaptonuria monitoring. Dried and liquid samples showed favorable accuracy and precision, although analyte-specific stability limitations remain a barrier to routine use.

Drug monitoring by volumetric absorptive microsampling: method development considerations to mitigate hematocrit effects

Fang, K.; Bowen, C. L.; Kellie, J. F.; Karlinsey, M. Z.; Evans, C. A.
Bioanalysis | 2018

This study developed a VAMS bioanalytical method and examined hematocrit-related bias for an investigational compound. Optimized extraction minimized bias across 30–60% hematocrit, and all validation parameters met acceptance criteria.

Capillary blood microsampling to determine serum biopharmaceutical concentration: Mitra((R)) microsampler vs dried blood spot

Bloem, K.; Schaap, T.; Boshuizen, R.; Kneepkens, E. L.; Wolbink, G. J.; Vries, A.; Rispens, T.
Bioanalysis | 2018

This study compared Mitra capillary microsampling with conventional dried-blood collection for estimating therapeutic-antibody concentrations. The resulting protocols supported practical conversion of capillary results to serum or plasma concentrations.

Novel volumetric adsorptive microsampling technique for determination of perfluorinated compounds in blood

Koponen, J.; Rudge, J.; Kushon, S.; Kiviranta, H.
Anal Biochem | 2018

This study evaluated 10 µL VAMS samples for measuring perfluoroalkyl acids in whole blood. The method showed suitable sensitivity, repeatability, accuracy, and analyte stability for human biomonitoring studies.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling as an alternative tool for therapeutic drug monitoring of first-generation anti-epileptic drugs

Velghe, S.; Stove, C. P.
Anal Bioanal Chem | 2018

This study developed and validated an LC-MS/MS method for four first-generation anti-epileptic drugs and one active metabolite in VAMS samples. Successful testing with quality-control and patient samples supported its use for therapeutic drug monitoring.

Patient Centric Sampling – What is it, where are we up to and where might it be leading us?

Neil Spooner
2017

This presentation reviews patient-centric sampling technologies for quantitative bioanalysis. It highlights lower sample volumes, reduced discomfort, greater convenience, and the ability to collect clinically useful data in settings where conventional sampling is difficult.
