Automated RNA Purification from Blood on a Mitra® Device with the Maxwell® RSC simplyRNA Blood Kit

Promega
2026

This application note provides a workflow for purifying RNA from whole blood collected on 10, 20, or 30 µL VAMS tips in a Mitra device using the Maxwell RSC simplyRNA Blood Kit and Maxwell RSC Instrument.

Tolerability and Feasibility of Minimally Invasive Canine Skin Sampling: Excellent Tolerability Meets Transcriptomic Challenges

Herrmann, I.; Mamo, L. B.; Dickey, A. N.
Vet Dermatol | 2026

This veterinary study compared microbiopsy, skin scraping, and tape stripping for minimally invasive skin sampling in dogs. All methods were feasible and well tolerated, but RNA yield, integrity, and contamination limited reliable downstream transcriptomic analysis.

Where are we after 15 years of minimally invasive skin sampling? A fit-for-purpose review of microbiopsy research from concept to the clinic.

Yamada, M.; Dev, V.; Nobel, M. E.; Pearson, F. E.; Layton, A.; Prow, T.
F1000Res | 2026

This review compares minimally invasive skin-sampling methods through a fit-for-purpose framework and uses microbiopsy development as a translational case study. It concludes that microbiopsy can complement other approaches when subsurface material, spatial precision, or repeat sampling is important, but is not a universal replacement for conventional biopsy.

Multimodal imaging and microbiopsy enable quantification of topical drug distribution and oxidative-stress safety biomarkers in human skin

Yamada, Miko; Prow, Tarl W.; Evans, Conor L.; Chan, Kin Foong
Proc. of SPIE | 2026

This work combines label-free multiphoton imaging with microbiopsy-based molecular and chemical assays to assess topical-product distribution and biological response in skin. Volunteer sunscreen and ex vivo diclofenac studies demonstrated localized imaging, qPCR, oxidative-stress, and quantitative exposure measurements at relevant sampling depths.

Image-Guided Microbiopsy for Multimodal Skin-Ageing Classification: Clinical Feasibility, Imaging Phenotyping, and Biomarker Performance

Prow, Tarl; Hussain, Iaza; Yamada, Miko
2026

This study presents an image-guided microbiopsy workflow that combines clinical imaging, skin-surface phenotyping, and qPCR biomarkers to classify skin ageing. The authors report clinical feasibility and candidate molecular signals, while noting that the manuscript was reconstructed from supplied presentation data and requires further validation.

Feasibility of RNA Sequencing from Human Skin Microbiopsies in Actinic Keratosis and Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Paired Pilot Comparison with Shave Biopsy

Yamada, Miko; Dev, Vidiya; Prow, Tarl
2026

This paired pilot study compared skin microbiopsy and shave-biopsy specimens from actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma lesions for RNA sequencing. Microbiopsy yielded less starting RNA but produced sequenceable libraries and broadly concordant expression profiles, supporting further feasibility studies rather than diagnostic-equivalence claims.

Development and application of an LC-MS/MS method for 8 antiepileptic drugs and 2 metabolites using microsampling techniques (DBS and VAMS)

Cobo-Golpe, M.; Paniagua-Gonzalez, L.; Lendoiro, E.; Blanco-Ces, M.; Lopez-Rabunal, A.; Abella, J.; Castro, D.; Melcon, C.; Fuentes, P.; Carballeira, I.; Garcia, C.; Gomez, C.; Lopez-Rivadulla Lamas, M.; Cruz, A.; de-Castro-Rios, A.
J Anal Toxicol | 2026

Researchers developed an LC-MS/MS method for eight antiepileptic drugs and two metabolites using DBS and VAMS. Application to 80 paired patient samples showed promising relationships between microsampling and conventional plasma concentrations, including the first reported microsampling measurement of dihydroxycarbazepine.

Advancing Blood Proteome Analysis Past the Plasma Age: Mass Spectrometry of Whole Blood and Plasma Collected with Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling Devices

Karsten, E.; Lucas, N.; Hill, C.; McMahon, R.; Herbert, B.
J Proteome Res | 2026

This study evaluated VAMS-based processing for blood proteomics compared with conventional plasma and whole blood workflows. The VAMS-optimized approach increased protein identifications, improved reproducibility, and supported longitudinal biomarker discovery applications.

An LC-MS untargeted metabolomic comparison between three blood microsampling devices, whole blood, and plasma

Avella, D.; Turunen, S.; Avgerinou, G.; Petridou, A.; Mougios, V.; Zarei, I.; Auriola, S.; Hanhineva, K.; Karkkainen, O.
Metabolomics | 2026

This metabolomics study compared Mitra, a comparator device, and dried blood spot microsampling with whole blood and plasma. Results showed blood microsampling profiles aligned more closely with whole blood than plasma and may support flexible human biomonitoring workflows.

Cefepime pharmacokinetics in critically ill children with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome using volumetric absorptive microsampling

Amajor, V.; Bwint, A.; Shein, S. L.; Hume, J.; Rowan, C. M.; Flygt, L. P.; Malone, M. P.; Stenson, E. K.; Weiss, S. L.; Zinter, M. S.; Kannan, S.; Dahmer, M. K.; Nofziger, R. A.; Pai, M. P.; Zuppa, A. F.; Rhodes, N. J.; Hall, M. W.; Scheetz, M. H.; Downes, K. J.; Pediatric Acute Lung, Injury; Sepsis Investigators, Network
Antimicrob Agents Chemother | 2026

This study used VAMS to characterize cefepime pharmacokinetics in critically ill children with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The work demonstrates the feasibility of microsampling-based antimicrobial PK modeling in pediatric critical care.
