Evaluation of a skin microsampling clinical trial design for temporal/spatial molecular profiling in topically treated photoaged skin

Prow, T.
Journal of Investigative Dermatology | 2019

This clinical study used repeated skin microbiopsy sampling to evaluate molecular changes in photoaged skin after topical treatment. The approach enabled temporal and spatial gene-expression measurements and was intended to reduce the burden associated with conventional biopsies.

A review of microsampling techniques and their social impact

Lei, B. U. W.; Prow, T. W.
Biomed Microdevices | 2019

This review compares current skin- and blood-microsampling techniques, including their benefits, analytical limitations, and potential point-of-care applications. It also discusses the broader effects of less-invasive sampling on access, turnaround time, and patient care.

Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling: A New Sampling Tool for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Antiepileptic Drugs

D'Urso, A.; Rudge, J.; Patsalos, P. N.; de Grazia, U.
Ther Drug Monit | 2019

This study developed and validated a VAMS–LC-MS/MS method for measuring 14 antiepileptic drugs and two active metabolites in whole blood. The assay was accurate, precise, stable across a broad temperature range, and showed no volumetric hematocrit bias, supporting therapeutic drug monitoring applications.

Official International Association for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology Guideline: Development and Validation of Dried Blood Spot-Based Methods for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

Capiau, S.; Veenhof, H.; Koster, R. A.; Bergqvist, Y.; Boettcher, M.; Halmingh, O.; Keevil, B. G.; Koch, B. C. P.; Linden, R.; Pistos, C.; Stolk, L. M.; Touw, D. J.; Stove, C. P.; Alffenaar, J. C.
Ther Drug Monit | 2019

This official guideline defines development, analytical validation, clinical validation, and routine-use requirements for dried-blood-spot therapeutic drug-monitoring methods. It covers DBS-specific issues such as sample volume, hematocrit, spot quality, collection procedures, comparison with venous blood, and cross-validation.

Targeted metabolomics of whole blood using volumetric absorptive microsampling

Kok, M. G. M.; Nix, C.; Nys, G.; Fillet, M.
Talanta | 2019

Researchers optimized VAMS–mass-spectrometry analysis of 36 metabolites from 10 µL whole-blood samples. The method detected all targets with good repeatability, and dried samples remained stable at room temperature longer than wet blood.

Spring is in the air: seasonal profiles indicate vernal change of miRNA activity

Ludwig, N.; Hecksteden, A.; Kahraman, M.; Fehlmann, T.; Laufer, T.; Kern, F.; Meyer, T.; Meese, E.; Keller, A.; Backes, C.
RNA Biol | 2019

Researchers profiled seasonal variation in blood-borne microRNAs and validated the findings in 919 samples collected with the Mitra home-sampling device. Spring-to-fall differences involved immune-related microRNAs, indicating that season may confound diagnostic or prognostic signatures.

Quantitating fatty acids in dried blood spots on a common collection card versus a novel wicking sampling device

Gunash, J.; Aristizabal-Henao, J. J.; Stark, K. D.
Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids | 2019

This study compared quantitative fatty-acid measurement from conventional dried-blood cards, a 10 µL wicking device, and wet blood. Dried-sample results were broadly similar to wet blood, supporting concentration-based reporting alongside relative fatty-acid percentages.

A pharmacokinetic study of radiprodil oral suspension in healthy adults comparing conventional venous blood sampling with two microsampling techniques

Sciberras, D.; Otoul, C.; Lurquin, F.; Smeraglia, J.; Lappert, A.; De Bruyn, S.; Jaap van Lier, J.
Pharmacol Res Perspect | 2019

This phase I study compared conventional venous, Mitra, and Aqua-Cap microsampling for radiprodil pharmacokinetics in healthy adults. Overall exposure estimates were comparable, although Mitra produced somewhat lower values, supporting future use of microsampling in pediatric studies.

The sncRNA Zoo: a repository for circulating small noncoding RNAs in animals

Fehlmann, T.; Backes, C.; Pirritano, M.; Laufer, T.; Galata, V.; Kern, F.; Kahraman, M.; Gasparoni, G.; Ludwig, N.; Lenhof, H. P.; Gregersen, H. A.; Francke, R.; Meese, E.; Simon, M.; Keller, A.
Nucleic Acids Res | 2019

Researchers used low-input RNA sequencing of blood cells from 21 animal species to characterize circulating small noncoding RNAs. The work found strong evolutionary conservation and created a publicly searchable atlas of species- and family-level expression profiles.

A protocol integrating remote patient monitoring patient reported outcomes and cardiovascular biomarkers

Shufelt, C.; Dzubur, E.; Joung, S.; Fuller, G.; Mouapi, K. N.; Van Den Broek, I.; Lopez, M.; Dhawan, S.; Arnold, C. W.; Speier, W.; Mastali, M.; Fu, Q.; Van Eyk, J. E.; Spiegel, B.; Merz, C. N. B.
NPJ Digit Med | 2019

This protocol describes the PRE-MACE study, which combines wearable sensors, patient-reported outcomes, plasma biomarkers, and at-home blood microsampling in people with stable ischemic heart disease. The study tests whether remote monitoring can identify early warning signals for major adverse cardiac events and reduce resource use.
