medRxiv | 2021

This nationwide serosurvey used participant-provided blood samples to estimate previously undiagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infection in U.S. adults during the first pandemic wave. The analysis estimated 4.8 undiagnosed infections for every diagnosed case and identified substantial regional and demographic variation.

medRxiv | 2021

Researchers developed a receptor-binding-domain ELISA that detected antibody responses after SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination across several specimen types. The assay accommodated remotely collected dried-blood microsamples and performed comparably with commercial tests, supporting large-scale seroepidemiology.

Enhanced urinary stability of peptide hormones and growth factors by dried urine microsampling

Protti, M.; Sberna, P. M.; Sberna, A. E.; Ferrante, R.; Mandrioli, R.; Mercolini, L.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2021

This study evaluated VAMS and dried urine spots for anti-doping measurement of unstable peptide hormones and growth factors. Dried microsamples showed better 90-day stability than frozen liquid urine and could be stored and shipped at room temperature with minimal precautions.

VAMS and StAGE as innovative tools for the enantioselective determination of clenbuterol in urine by LC-MS/MS

Protti, M.; Sberna, P. M.; Sardella, R.; Vovk, T.; Mercolini, L.; Mandrioli, R.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2021

Researchers developed a VAMS and stop-and-go-extraction workflow for enantioselective LC-MS/MS measurement of clenbuterol in dried urine. The validated method performed well in patient samples and may support future anti-doping testing of clenbuterol enantiomers.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS(R)) in therapeutic protein quantification by LC-MS/MS: Investigation of anticoagulant impact on assay performance and recommendations for best practices in method development

Gao, X.; Chen, C.; Geng, D.; Bateman, K. P.; Shi, S.; Woolf, E. J.; Xu, Y.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2021

This study developed a VAMS–LC-MS/MS method for pharmacokinetic measurement of a therapeutic monoclonal antibody and demonstrated good agreement with conventional serum in a non-human-primate study. A clinical implementation issue traced to EDTA anticoagulant led the authors to recommend specific development and validation practices for therapeutic-protein assays.

Determination of paracetamol and its metabolites via LC-MS/MS in dried blood volumetric absorptive microsamples: A tool for pharmacokinetic studies

Delahaye, L.; Baerdemaeker, L.; Stove, C. P.
J Pharm Biomed Anal | 2021

This study developed and validated LC-MS/MS methods for paracetamol and four metabolites in plasma, whole blood, and 10 µL VAMS samples. Successful testing with patient samples showed that the methods were suitable for future pharmacokinetic studies of paracetamol metabolism.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling for the quantification of tacrolimus in capillary blood by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Tron, C.; Ferrand-Sorre, M. J.; Querzerho-Raguideau, J.; Chemouny, J. M.; Houssel-Debry, P.; Verdier, M. C.; Bellissant, E.; Lemaitre, F.
J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci | 2021

Researchers developed and clinically validated an HPLC-MS/MS method for tacrolimus in VAMS capillary-blood samples. The assay met analytical requirements and showed strong agreement with venous whole blood, supporting minimally invasive monitoring in transplant recipients.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling as alternative sampling technique for renal function assessment in the paediatric population using iohexol

Dhondt, L.; Croubels, S.; De Cock, P.; Dhont, E.; De Baere, S.; De Paepe, P.; Devreese, M.
J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci | 2021

This pediatric study evaluated VAMS-based iohexol measurement as an alternative method for assessing glomerular filtration rate. Agreement with plasma testing was strong at higher GFR values, while lower-function measurements may require refinements to the sampling protocol.

A review of recent advances in microsampling techniques of biological fluids for therapeutic drug monitoring

Tey, H. Y.; See, H. H.
J Chromatogr A | 2021

This review summarizes recent microsampling advances for therapeutic drug monitoring across blood and other biological fluids. It compares DBS, VAMS, and additional dried-matrix approaches, emphasizing sample preparation, analytical challenges, and matrix-specific advantages.

Capillary Blood Levels of Hydroxychloroquine and Methotrexate Are Stable for up to 5 Years When Collected on Volumetric Absorptive Microsamplers

Brady, K.; Alexander, R. V.; Stimson, D.; Rudolph, M.; Kammesheidt, A.
J Appl Lab Med | 2021

This long-term stability study evaluated hydroxychloroquine and methotrexate-polyglutamate measurements in capillary blood collected on VAMS. Concentrations remained within predefined agreement limits after up to five years of frozen storage.
