General Questions

What is microsampling?

Advances in bioanalysis now allow for the assessment of drug and chemical exposure from smaller specimen samples. With Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling (VAMS™) technology, dependable data can be obtained from specimens as small as 10 and 20 µL.  

What is the Mitra microsampler?

The Mitra microsampler is a non-invasive biological fluid collection device that allows users to run clinical or research tests from a single drop of blood.  It also enables remote specimen collection with minimal training which yields high-quality data from 10 or 20 µL of fluid.

What fluids is it compatible with?

Mitra microsampling technology is compatible with almost any fluid. Common matrices include: whole blood, plasma / serum, urine, saliva, CSF, and tears. Less common matrices include: wound exudates, cervical fluid, ocular fluid, and more.


What analytes can be extracted from the Mitra microsampler?

Most analytes can be extracted from the Mitra microsampler, including: small and large drug molecules, biomarkers, RNA / DNA, peptides, proteins, etc. Analytes that require special consideration before using Mitra include: oxidatively labile drugs and biomarkers, blood cell counts for CBCs and hematology tests, enzyme activity assays in which the undisturbed enzyme is required, etc.

What industries use Mitra microsampling technology?

Mitra microsampling technology can be used in any industry in which biological fluid samples are tested. This includes animal and human (academia) research, pharmaceutical development, clinical diagnostics and healthcare settings. Is the device sterile?

The Mitra microsampler is not sold as a sterile product. However, the product is extremely clean and manufactured in a GMP environment. Gamma sterilization tests have been successful, and our customers can use this process if they choose.

What formats are available, and how do they differ?

The Mitra microsampler is available in a variety of formats suited to different use cases. These include the Clamshell format, the Cartridge format, the 96-rack and 96-autorack, and a Collection Convenience Kit designed for easy at-home sampling. Is the Mitra microsampler an FDA approved medical device?

Yes, the Mitra microsampler is now registered at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Class 1 Medical Device.  The device is also registered as CE / IVD. 

What test panels is Mitra microsampling technology compatible with?

What is the difference between Mitra microsampling technology and Dried Blood Spot (DBS) cards?

The Mitra device has advantages over DBS cards and filter paper in the areas of collection, processing, and extraction. The Mitra device provides the key benefits of working with dried blood, but with a volumetrically accurate, stable dried blood sample that reduces the incidence of reworks. 


How much does it cost?

The cost of Mitra microsampling technology varies depending on the needs and implementation requirements of the client. Your microsampling specialist will help you determine your best value.

Where can I purchase a Mitra microsampler?

Mitra microsampling products can be purchased directly from Neoteryx or from one of our authorized distributors.

How exactly does switching to microsampling save money?

Initial implementation requires an upfront investment and may disrupt existing workflow, depending on the current processes in place. However, any initial friction is well worth it - Mitra microsampling technology saves money  (e.g. no cold-chain shipping), labor (e.g. compatible with typical liquid handling instrumentation), and resources (e.g use non-clinical staff to collect specimens) over time while better allowing for future growth.

Preclinical Applications / Animal Testing

Can Mitra microsampler be used in preclinical trials and animal testing?

Animal sampling in preclinical contexts is among the most popular applications for this technology. Mitra microsampling allows preclinical studies to break free of the familiar "one mouse, one time point" design.  It reduces (by up to sevenfold) the number of animals required for pharmacokinetic, toxicokinetic, pharmacodynamics, and efficacy studies, with reduced costs and improved data quality. It also reduces animal stress and reliance on satellite populations, along with many other advantages.

Is it true that serial sampling with Mitra microsampler can reduce inter animal variability?

Yes. Traditional, or composite sampling, relies on using one individual mouse per data point, then pooling the data together to determine an overall trend. Although the dosing, animal weight, etc. are standardized, there may still be unknown metabolic differences that contribute to variance in the data (inter-animal variability). With Mitra and other serial sampling techniques, this same data is taken from one individual animal, and therefore inter-animal variability is eliminated.

How can Mitra microsampling aid in upholding the NC3Rs?

Serial sampling reduces the overall number of animals used without sacrificing data quality. It reduces animal stress and facilitates a more refined workflow, ideal for labs that plan to cut costs or streamline processes for future growth.


Clinical Research

Is there a correlation between venous and capillary blood?

Our customers have produced bridging data showing correlations between venous blood draws and fingerstick blood draws, but there is a dependence on the analytical workflow and the compounds to be analyzed. Different analytes are known to circulate differently in venous and capillary blood, so studies will need to be done for each individual analyte and assay.

Can the Mitra microsampler be use for at home or remote sampling?

Yes. At-home or remote sampling with the Mitra microsampler is quick and convenient and requires minimal training. Watch this video to see how it works.

Why is microsampling so popular with therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)?

The use of dried microsamples has produced strong correlations to the "golden standard" analytical methods for drug concentration determination. The advantages in participant comfort and ease of use make it an obvious choice for therapeutic drug monitoring.

Molecular Genetics (DNA/RNA)

Can the Mitra microsampler be used with molecular tests?

Yes, Mitra microsampling technology allows scientists to yield NGS-grade DNA/RNA from dried blood collected in the clinic or remotely.

Is it possible to extract DNA/RNA from the Mitra microsampler?

Yes, it is possible to extract 450 ng DNA per 20 µL Tip or 100 ng RNA per 20 µL tip. We recommend using Norgen Biotek RNA/DNA extraction kits available through Neoteryx.

What is the stability of DNA/RNA on the Mitra microsampler?

DNA/RNA on a Mitra microsampler tip has been shown to remain stable for at least seven days.

Can the Mitra microsampler be used with next generation sequencing?

In this study, both total RNA (large mRNA and microRNA) as well as total DNA were shown to be preserved in the tip when dried on the Mitra device. The isolated DNA and RNA can be used in downstream molecular tests including qPCR, RT-PCR, sequencing, SNP analysis, and next generation sequencing.

Can the Mitra microsampler be used to detect infectious diseases?

Although Neoteryx itself does not perform such tests, we have clients testing for both disease antibodies, as well as bacterial or viral RNA/DNA for the detection of infectious diseases.
